Apple Pandowdy

INGREDIENTS

  • 6 medium tart apples, pared and thinly sliced (about 6 cups)
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup maple syrup
  • 3 tablespoons water
  • 2 tablespoons butter or margarine, melted
  • 1-1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/3 cup shortening
  • 3 tablespoons milk
  • 3 tablespoons butter or margarine, melted
  • Cream

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Heat oven to 350F.
  2. Mix apples, sugar, cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg. Turn into ungreased 2-quart casserole.
  3. Mix water and 2 tablespoons butter. Pour over apple mixture.
  4. Mix flour and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Cut in shortening. Sprinkle in milk 1 tablespoons at a time, mixing until all flour is moistened.
  5. Gather pastry into ball; shape into flattened round on lightly floured board.
  6. Roll round to fit top of casserole. Place over apples, and brush with 3 tablespoons butter.
  7. Bake 30 minutes; remove from oven.
  8. Cut crust into small pieces, and mix pieces into apple filling.
  9. Bake until apples are tender, about 30 minutes. Serve hot with cream.
